On February 17th 2011 the Veterinary inspection has closed Spirit Association's shelter in Zagreb, Sesvete.

After a month of superhuman efforts and many sleepless nights, Spirit has managed to find permanent, loving new homes or nice temporary foster homes for approximately two hundred dogs that have been in our care.

Since it is practically impossible to find quality homes for such a large number of dogs in such a short period, some of them have been taken to shelters abroad where they will be able to stay until they are adopted. After checking the now almost completely empty shelter, even the Veterinary inspection has admitted that Spirit has acceded to all requests and accomplished „mission impossible“. The dogs who were not adopted have not been taken to the official Zagreb's shelter Dumovec, but the Inspection allowed them to stay at the location of the former shelter until Spirit finds them adequate new homes. Since some of the dogs that remained are quite distrustful and/or traumatized, for them we are looking for special people, that is experienced and very patient future owners.

Therefore, it has been concluded that Association Spirit can continue saving dogs in the future, but only after it finds a new location and builds a new, appropriate shelter there.

Since Spirit still hasn't found a new location – which means that it cannot provide accommodation for the abandoned animals, but doesn't want to stop helping those who are in need – we ask for all people who have the possibility and good will for temporary providing a home for an abandoned dog or a cat to contact us by e-mail: info@udruga-spirit.hr. Depending on the arrangement, the expenses of food, vaccinations, castration and possible further veterinary care will be covered by Spirit.

Also, we need help with covering the veterinary expenses, because the debt at this moment is about HRK 50.000! In 2010 the city of Zagreb has participated only in the castration expenses for a portion of our dogs, wereas all the vaccinations and other veterinary costs were paid by Spirit.

In the end, we would like to say BIG THANK YOU to all those who did not turn a deaf ear to our plead for help, to all wonderful permanent and temporary new owners and foster homes in Croatia and abroad and to all the shelters and associations in Austria and Germany that reacted promptly and generously offered help with accomodation for Spirit's dogs. Also, we want to thank all the media that published stories and articles about us, radio stations who gave us a few minutes in their programmes, as well as all those who got actively involved in advertising our dogs, keeping the media informed and supported us – even if it was only with kind and encouraging words!
